Colossians 3:1-17


CONTEXT: So far we have seen Paul establish the Supremacy of Christ in chapter one as he detailed for us the nature of Christ's person and work. Then in Chapter 2 Paul began to battle against the particular heresies that plagued the Colossians - Legalism, Asceticism and Mysticism. In particular he repeatedly warned against seeking to become Sanctified by means of rules - Do not eat, do not drink, do not touch. So the question arises - how do we deal with our tendency to sin if not by rules? That is the point of chapter 3.

TEXT: Colossians 3:1-17 (ESV)
1 If then you have been raised with Christ,

NOTE that this is a qualified word - IF… it does not assume you are in… but listen - one of the most consistent signs that you are a christian is how to perpetually deal with the sin your heart.

seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:

Do you remember the first time you felt the tug of the sin nature after you experienced the grace of God?

Perhaps like me you felt as thought you would never again sin against God. Now your eyes were open, now your mind is clear and alert to eternal truths. The chains of sin have fallen off of you… but still there is the tug of temptation.
The hymn writer said it this way - Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it…

Where does that come from? What place does sin find in a redeemed heart?

Paul begins by saying the heart of the problem is a problem of the heart.
