CONTEXT: Remember that the first couple of chapters Paul spent focusing on the person and work of Christ. Then he began to apply the Gospel to all people - no matter their ethnicity, gender, age… now he is going to finish his work of art called, ''Colossians'' off by filling in the details… he is going to address the various groups represented in the church…wives, husbands, children, Fathers, employees, employers. Today we are looking at a very non politically correct verse…

This is a verse that you don't find on a coffee mug, or a christian t-shirt. We don't put this one on the rear bumper of our car. To be honest - we are not sure what to do with it. Ironically, this verse made it in to the first wedding I ever preached…

TEXT: Colossians 3:18 (ESV)
18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

ILLUSTRATION: The first wedding I ever conducted was for one of my best friends from childhood. I really didn't know how to preach a marriage sermon. So I found all of the verses about the husband and wife in the NT and wrote them down and explained them - which come to find out isn't a bad method.

So when I got to the part about the role of the wife I started reading all of verses that pertained to wives there all these words like submission and subjection.

Now I'm not a prophet, but I do have a measure of discernment… and by the look on the brides face I could tell she was pleased with me reading those passages.

I really didn't know how controversial those passages could be. I wasn't married, I believed the bible.

Why is that the case? Why is it difficult for us to stomach the concept of the husband being the federal head of the home and the wife working under his authority? Well it begins where most problems begin… in the garden…

In Genesis 3:16-19 we see that the family was ground zero for the fallout of the original sin.
