OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Let's pretend for a minute that you were talking off today with your significant other for the Bahamas. On the flight down, your oxygen mask drops and the pilot comes over the intercom says, ''ladies and gentlemen, you will notice that your oxygen mask has deployed. We need you go ahead and put those on. We will have further instructions in a minute.

The first thing you would conclude is something has gone terribly wrong. There would be no need of that instruction unless something has gone bad and we are in danger.

And so it is when it comes to marriage! Why does the bible need to instruct us on
our roles within marriage, because there is a problem!

- The marriage rate continues to decline in the United States. In fact, there has been a decline of over 50% from 1970 - 2010. (The State of Our Unions 2011, 60)
- The percentage of married individuals, over the age of 18, who respond that their marriages are ''very happy'' has gradually declined over the last four decades.

Divorce
- The American divorce rate is nearly twice what it was in 1960.
- Current estimates suggest that 40-50% of recent marriages will end in separation, prior the death of either spouse.

Cohabitation
- There has been a significant increase in the number of women presently cohabiting with a man: from 3% in 1982 to 11% in 2006-2010. (National Health Statistics Report, 2012)
- Between 1960-2010, the number of cohabiting couples increased 17-fold. (The State of Our Unions 2011, 75)

So the oxygen masks have most certainly deployed in our country.

Marriage is a risky endeavor - that may be why the average age for getting married for a man has risen from 23 in 1960 to 29 in 2016.
