Colossians 4:2-6
CONTEXT: Well it seems most everyone's team won this weekend. I always remind folks not to ever skip church to watch a ball game or God might, just might decide to punish your team in a bowl game later in the season to teach you a lesson. Just saying… I'm not superstitious… but I've seen it happen many times and it will be YOUR fault.
The cool thing about sports in general and football in particular is that while there is a lot of strategy and nuance involved the goal is remarkably simple - score more points than the other team. For the individual player - get the ball a little further down the field.
I think Paul would say that in many ways life for the Christian is just as simple. All you have to do is get the Gospel ball a little further down the field. Advance the Kingdom.
So it's not about how much you accumulate. It's not about your degrees and titles, your cars or you land - it's about… do more people understand and believe the Gospel because you were alive. If so - you are winning…. if not - you are loosing. It's that simple.
I think that is in essence what Paul is teaching us today in our text.
Paul is reminding the Colossians that they are called to live a life that advances the Kingdom… that gets the ball further down field. Today, there are at least 3 principles in our text that help us to live a Kingdom Advancing Life….
TEXT: Colossians 4:2-6 (ESV)
2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison- 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
