Colossians 4:7-18
ILLUSTRATION: Phil Waldrep is a distant cousin of mine and one of my favorites things is to hear him tell stories about our family. Specifically, his grandmother Tilly. Tilly would say things sometimes that didn't quiet come out right.
For example:
- One time she said - Phil you you preached at my friend Martha's church this Sunday - he said, ''Yes, I did''. She said, ''well Martha said the last time they had a guest preacher - he preached for a solid hour and didn't say a thing - but you did it in half the time''.
I know what she meant, but that's not what she said!
- On another occasion she was telling about one of her friend's husbands who was growing senile - but as he grew older he enjoyed listening to audio tapes of different preachers. One day Mrs. Tilly called Phil and said,''Phil you know Clarence has the Alzheimer's - well his wife wants you to know that ever since he lost his mind - you are his favorite preacher''.
I know what she meant, but that's not what she said!
One of the things people do when they get in their 90's is they tend to pick up conversations exactly where they left off. So if they had a conversation with one person then call another - they will just continue the conversation without always grounding it in it's proper context.
Well one day she called Phil and said, ''Phil, what's wrong with Obadiah?''
He said, ''Well grandma, is he sick?'', she said, ''No he's dead!, He's been dead a long time now!''
Apparently what happened was - every time the preacher would preach a text, she'd write down the preachers name and when it was preached. She liked to go up to the preacher and say, ''I remember when you preached that in 1974!'' She didn't remember it - it was written down. But one day she discovered that she had never heard a sermon in Obadiah.
My dad did the same thing - I remember noticing that some verses had 5 ...
