DESCRIPTION: Funeral for a godly man based on the life of Abraham.

I. Abraham was a man of faith.

Galatians 3:9 ''Abraham, the man of faith.'' Faith was the theme of Abraham's life.

Gen. 12 Abraham heard the call of faith.

Gen. 15 Declared righteous by faith.

Gen. 22 Abraham faced the test of faith.

The Bible goes on to say that all of those who have the faith of Abraham are children of Abraham.

APPLICATION: Our brother was a man of faith. He was called to faith as a young man and was baptized into Christ. Because Abraham lived 2000 years before Christ he did not know that his salvation would be accomplished specifically through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Therefore, Abraham could not be baptized into Christ as an expression of his faith. But we can. We know what Abraham could not know. And therefore our departed brother responded to the call to faith by being baptized into Christ. It was then that God washed away his sins, clothed him with Christ, and credited him with saving righteousness. And our brother continued to walk by faith.

II. Abraham was a good businessman.

Genesis 13:2 ''Abram was very rich in live-stock, silver and gold.'' In that day and age, you didn't get to be rich without being very astute. And in Abraham's case he acknowledged that his blessings and good fortune came from God so his faith played a role in his prosperity as well.

Our departed brother was a good businessman.

By ''good businessman'' I mean that he had a successful career. He was responsible. He had integrity in travel - he was godly and could not abide foul language. In his ''Joy at Work'' Dennis Bakke contends that joy at work is found in responsibility. After I read the book I happened to be riding in the van with our departed brother and asked him what he thought the joy of work was. He answered: ''Responsibility.''
