DESCRIPTION - Funeral for a musician and or teacher based upon David.
What kind of legacy do we want to leave when we die? In II Samuel 23 we have seven verses identified as the ''last words of David.'' These are the verses where he sums up his life. These are the verses where he gives his own eulogy. These are the verses where he defines his legacy. And it's a legacy that parallels that of Jim and it's worth emulating. He left vast riches and wealth to his descendants but he doesn't talk about that. David uses his last words to talk about love.
I. He Left the legacy of a love for family
II Sam. 23:5 ''This is how God has cared for my family.'' (NCV)
David loved his family. He was not a perfect father, of course, but he loved and was devoted to his family. He was a man who understood how important spiritual realities are and he passed these truths along to his family. The greatest day of his life was the day that God told him he was going to bless not only David himself, and his immediate family but also his descendants after he died
APPLICATION: You can tell from the biography of Jim that we read that he loved his family. You can see it in the love of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren had for him.
II. He left a legacy of service
II Sam. 23:3-4 ''The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: ?'When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.'''
David left a legacy of service by using his gifts to serve the kingdom of Israel. Because he ruled in righteousness and the fear of the Lord, he was a blessing to the nation.
