The night before the Lord Jesus went to the cross
of Calvary He said to His disciples, "I will pray the
Father and He will give you another Comforter that He
may abide with you forever." He was referring to the
coming of the Holy Spirit, the other Comforter, the
other Friend, the One who would be just like the Lord
Jesus in their lives.
The next day the Lord Jesus did go to the cross
of Calvary and died on that cross for our sins. He was
buried. Three days later the Bible says He arose
again. Forty days later the Lord Jesus ascended back
to heaven to the right hand of the Father. Ten days
after that the Day of Pentecost came and the Bible
says that on the Day of Pentecost the promise which
the Lord Jesus made was fulfilled. On the day of
Pentecost the Lord gave the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 2 when the Apostle Peter is preaching and is
explaining to the people what happened he said that
the Lord Jesus having ascended to the right hand of
the Father hath shed forth this which you see. In
chapter 2:38 he said, "Repent and be baptized every
one of you for the remission of sins and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
The Holy Spirit coming into the lives of
believers on the day of Pentecost was the birthday
gift of the church, the resurrection gift of our
living Lord to His believers. So, the gift of the Holy
Spirit is the Holy Spirit Himself in the great work He
does for us, the work of salvation.
Now that the Holy Spirit dwells within our hearts
the Bible says as we yield to the Holy Spirit He does
a work in us. The Bible says in Philippians 2:13,
"For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to
do of His good pleasure."
So the work the Holy Spirit of God does in us is
the work of sanctification. The work for us is His
