OPENING ILLUSTRATION: In 1952 Florence Chadwick stepped into the waters of the Pacific Ocean off of Catalina Island determined to swim to the shore of mainland California. She had already been the first woman to swim the English Channel both ways. But as the embarked on her swim a great, thick fog settled around her. The fog was so thick that she couldn't even see the boats as the accompanied her. Finally she became so physically and emotionally exhausted that she stopped swimming and pulled out. It wasn't until she was on the boat that she discovered that the shore was less that ½ mile away. At a news conference the next day she stated, ''All I could see was fog… I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it''.
CONTEXT: In our text a great fog was about to settle over the disciples. Judas had departed to betray Jesus and in a matter of hours they would see the one in whom they had set all of their hopes nailed to a beam of wood.
Jesus had told them of this day many times, but the fog was settling fast. It was at this most strategic moment that Jesus pulls them aside and reminds them that Canaan land is just is sight.
Look with me at verse 1… John 14:1-6 (NASB95)
1 ''Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 ''In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
Now think about it, what had they not had for 3 years? A place! The foxes have holes, the birds of the air have a next, but the Son of Man had no place to lay His head.
Now Jesus is saying, I'm going to give you a permanent place, and what a place it is.
Let's talk about that PLACE tonight -
Before I teach you what the Bible says about this place called Heaven, let me clear up a few misconceptions…
