This verse is one of those verses in the Bible that gives us a great summary statement. In one
verse here is a statement that summarizes one of the great themes of the Bible. There are many verses
in the Bible that are summary in nature. For instance, in Matthew 28:19 it talks about our being
baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. There you have a great
summary statement concerning the person of God. There is one God the Bible teaches, but this one
God reveals Himself in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. There in one
simple statement in the Bible you have a summary concerning the person of God.
Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. There's a great
summary statement about the Lord Jesus Christ. It tells us about the past Jesus - the same yesterday.
It tells us about the Jesus of today. Then it tells us about the perennial Jesus - Jesus Christ the same
yesterday, today and forever.
There's a great summary statement about the church in Acts 9:31. There it says "then hath the
churches rest throughout Judea and Galilee and Samaria and were edified and walking in the fear of the
Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit were edified." There you have a great summary statement in
one single verse of the entire purpose of a church. If you want to know what a church is about you will
find it in that one verse of Scripture. The churches were edified. That is, the believers were growing in
the Lord. The church was multiplied. They were reaching out to win people to faith in Jesus. A church
