Mark 9:30-50

Introductory Remarks

So far we have been taking larger portions of Mark and looking at the themes found within them. This particular passage is two consecutive scenes in the life of Christ. The first scene takes place as Jesus and his disciples are passing through Galilee. As they are traveling Jesus tells his disciples a second time that the Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise. The disciples are too afraid to ask Jesus to explain himself, because last time one of them asked, which was big mouth Peter, Jesus all but screamed at him, ''Get behind me Satan!''

The second scene is when they reach their destination which is the town of Capernaum on the northern side of the Sea of Galilee. Once there Jesus begins asking the disciples what they were discussing while they travelled. Jesus uses this as a teaching moment about what it really means to be his disciple.

And that's why we need to pour over the Scriptures, watching, listening, learning, and obeying Jesus, the Son of God.

But as we dig in we are going to see that this is a very sobering passage. The life of the Ch ...
