Luke 1:26-38; Matthew 1:18-25
I believe…in Jesus who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
And born of the virgin Mary.
Scripture Reading:
Luke 1:26-38; Matthew 1:18-25
Explain how the passages tell us that Jesus is fully God and fully man.
The texts before us this morning point to a super-natural event. God tells us clearly that what He was about to do in Mary's life would be super-natural. The conception of Jesus would not happen in a normal, natural way, it would be done by a super-natural act of the Holy Spirit.
Both Matthew and Luke tell us that Mary was a virgin, meaning she had never had sex with a man and that she and Joseph had not come together either. Yet, it tells us that she was pregnant. A simple biology lesson would tell you that this is humanly impossible. How could Mary be pregnant if she had never come together with a man?
God does not work in natural ways. He Himself is super-natural. God works in super-natural ways. So God can and does do things in our natural world which can only be explained in super-natural terms, like a virgin becoming pregnant. The angel Gabriel states it clearly in Luke 1:37, ''For nothing will be impossible with God.'' God uses His Holy Spirit to overshadow Mary and conceive in her the God-man, or in this case, the God-baby, Jesus.
The super-natural conception of Jesus and the natural birth of Jesus point us to understand that Jesus was both fully God and fully man. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit - fully God; and born of the virgin Mary - fully man. This morning I am not going to concentrate on ''how this works,'' that Jesus can be both fully God and fully man. But instead we are going to concentrate on ''why'' Jesus needed to be both fully God and fully man.''
And to no one's surprise I am going to give you three reasons why Jesus needed to be fully God and fully man.
