It's All about Jesus (3 of 6)
Series: Acts

Acts 17:1-4
1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, ''This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.'' 4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.
Introduction: Read Acts 17:1-15 then go and read I and II Thessalonians, no I'm serious. One of the important things you need to understand about Christianity is that it is a ''historical religion''. What we read and study in the Bible are not just fables and fairy tales. We read history, eyewitness accounts of events that actually happened. These events, people and places are backed up not only by their own testimony but by the testimony of other ancient documents, historians as well as archeological findings.
So when you read in Acts 17 that Paul and Silas went to Thessalonica you can then go and read the letters of Paul written to the church that they planted there. I know I sound like a Bible nerd but I find it so exciting to read the travels and adventures of Paul and his companions and then to go and read the follow up letters he wrote to them, to encourage them, teach them and exhort them to live the Christian life and to continue to turn the world upside down for Jesus. It helps to read them in one sitting to get the full effect of Paul's message to them. It gives context and puts flesh on the bones of Acts. Read it like you would a letter, because that is exactly how it's supposed to be read, with all the intonations, emotions, expressions, and heartfelt love. We should do this with all of Paul's letters.
