THE DEVIL AND MARILYN MANSON!
(This message was preached at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, April 13, 1997, in light of the
appearance of the Marilyn Manson Band at the Jacksonville Coliseum)

Coming to a coliseum near you -- the Marilyn Manson Rock Band! The appearances of a band
named Marilyn Manson throughout the country have created firestorms from Christians all across America.
This five-member, hard-rock band takes its name from its leader who may be the scariest character the
rock scene has ever produced. Its music has been as high as number three on the charts, behind only
Celine Deon and Kenny G. The band received the 1996 MTV nomination for best hard-rock video.
Their most recent album, "Antichrist Superstar," has already reached platinum (a million sales) and may
reach double platinum. The music has been variously described as hard-rock, heavy-metal rock, shock-
rock, Goth-rock, and death-rock.
A little background may help us understand what the furor is all about. Each member of the band
has chosen a stage name combining a celebrity and a mass murderer. One is named Madonna Wayne
Gacy for Madonna and John Wayne Gacy, the executed homosexual who killed 33 boys. The leader takes
his name from Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson of Helter-Skelter fame.
Manson's real name is Brian Warner. This young man, in his late 20's, was born in Canton, Ohio,
and brought up in the Ft. Lauderdale area. His father operates a furniture store and his mother is a nurse.
By his own accounts he had a troubled childhood. He lived his entire life in fear. He was sexually abused
by his grandfather at the age of 12. He attended a private Catholic school where he says traditional values
were shoved down his throat daily. Being a small, skinny kid he was beat up every day at the bus stop.
