Intro/Attention

This morning we continue our series entitled, Famous Last Words. There were seven words that Jesus spoke, or seven profound statements that He made as He hung upon the cross. We saw last week that the first of those was A Word of Forgiveness. Today, we will see A Word of Salvation from Luke 23:39-43 READ TEXT -- PRAY

*In every life there will come an end. We all will have a last meal, take a last breath, and, of course, we will all give a last statement. And we may or may not know what that last statement will be. I recently heard of a famous opera tenor from the New York City Metropolitan opera named Richard Versalle. During a performance, he climbed up on a ladder for a special scene and sang the words: ''Too bad you can only live so long.'' At that moment, Versalle fell from the ladder and died on the spot. He couldn't have known those would be his last words. There was a very successful businessman who had opened up a chain of restaurants across the country. When his time to die had come, and as his family surrounded him on his deathbed and realized it only seconds to live, he gave his last words. Everyone leaned forward to hear what he would say. They can barely hear as he spoke in but a whisper, ''Slice the ham thin.'' I guess that summed up his life. But listen to the difference that faith can make in someone's final moments. The words of the first Christian martyr, Stephen, as he was being stoned and his life was draining away, he said, ''Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!'' (Acts 7:56) The Bohemian reformer John Hus was a man who believed the Scriptures to be the infallible and supreme authority in all matters. He died at the stake for that belief in Constance, Germany, on his forty-second birthday. As he refused a final plea to renounce his faith, Hus's last words were, ''What I taught with my lips ...
