Intro:

This morning we continue our series entitled, Famous Last Words. For several weeks now, we have been looking at the final words of Christ prior to His resurrection. There were seven words that Jesus spoke, or seven profound statements that He made as He hung upon the cross. And today, we see that Jesus speaks A Word of Anguish in Matthew 27:45-46

Forsaken. It is a powerful word. Think of a man who has been forsaken by his best friends. Or a faithful wife who has been suddenly forsaken by her husband. Think of a loving mother who has been forsaken by her daughter. Or, a faithful church member who has been forsaken by his church. Forsaken. It really is a powerful word. It paints the picture of being abandoned, deserted, and left alone. Yet here we read that the Son of God was forsaken. Almost impossible to believe. No fiction writer would ever have his hero say words like these. Heroes are strong, powerful, impervious, and victorious. They never show weakness. But here, the greatest hero of all time appears abandoned, helpless, left all alone. The Son of God was forsaken.*

While it is impossible for us to understand how God could forsake God, we hear these words of anguish come from the lips of God the Son. ''My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?''

Have you ever felt forsaken, all alone, deserted, and abandoned? Have you ever felt like you had nowhere to turn and no one to talk to? Jesus experienced loneliness and abandonment beyond what you and I will ever face. The perfect Son of God forsaken by His Heavenly Father.

His unforgettable surroundings: 45
