I. A Servant of God (1 of 37)
Series: Authentic Christian Living
John Barnett
James 1
Open with me to the first book written in our New Testaments, the book of James. This morning we are starting a new study of what you might call classic Christianity: what Christianity was like before all the ''additives'', before all the traditions slipped in. A lot of things that we think always were in the Church really weren't. And then we call it pioneer Christianity-it was back when it was just unfettered and it was hard and it was glorious. The book of James is a wonderful book. This morning I would like to introduce it to you in a different way. In fact we are only going to look at the first few words. I want you to just follow along as I read them.
James, a bondservant of God-
That's all the further we will get this morning but I hope that it is deeply impressed on your heart who James was and how he came to be a servant of God.
To do that I would like to start this study by doing a personal interview with James. In fact I spent a lot of time these past few weeks reading and reading and reading everything about his life and about where he shows up in the Scripture record and about what his background would have been like. From that I distilled down a personal- first person- account from him. Just imagine that James from this book- James from the Bible came this morning and gave his testimony much like we have testimonies for membership, testimonies for different ministries. Listen- I am trying to say this long enough so you will catch what I am doing so you just kind of follow him as he talks about how he came to Christ. Let's listen to James as he talks to us this morning.
Good morning my brethren in Christ Jesus, our exalted Lord and King.
My name is James; I am a servant of God and of my big brother while He was on earth - Jesus Christ. I was not always such a follower of Christ. Let me tell you my story . . .
