FILLING A CITY WITH YOUR DOCTRINE
Acts 5:17-32
Dr. Vines 5/25/86
These verses give a pretty good general statement of the state of
affairs in the city of Jerusalem at this particular time. It shows us
something of the tremendous impact that the early church was making ont he
city of Jerusalem. The religious leaders are alarmed because multitudes of
people are being saved. Folks are being healed, lives are being changed and
indeed an entire city is being impacted for the Lord Jesus Christ. I want to
focus on the statement in the 28th verse of this chapter that was made by the
high priest. The high priest said to these apostles, "You have filled
Jerusalem with your doctrine." When the high priest said that there was not
any compliment in his mind whatsoever. He was making that statement as a
complaint. He was complaining about what they were doing. Everybody was
talking about the living Lord Jesus. Everybody was hearing the message.
Changes were taking place in the lives of people and these religious leaders
were losing their hold on the common people. So, in a spirit of complaint,
with a frown on his face he must have said it. He said, you have filled
Jerusalem with this doctrine. As is so often true the Holy Spirit has a way of
taking what is intended to be a complaint and turn it into a tremendous
compliment. One time the enemies of Jesus said these words about Him. "That
Jesus is a friend of publicans and sinners." They meant it as a complaint, it
has become a tremendous compliment of the Lord Jesus. Jesus indeed is a friend
of sinners. I'm glad that's true, aren't you. I'm glad Jesus is a friend of
sinners because if that were not true, Jesus would not be my friend. Yet,
because he loves me and because He died to pay for my sins at Calvary's cross,
I can be a friend of Jesus and can be born again and come to know Him in a
personal kind of way. What they meant as a complaint became a tremendous
