In one of my pastorates, there was a couple who owned a store that was located near a crossroads. The front of the store was glass. Every time I would pull up to the gas pumps, the man would pick up his Bible and start to read it. The Bible, to him, was a book he could pick up and put on a show for the preachers.

Let me begin this sermon by saying I have the utmost confidence in the Word of God. I believe that this Book has God for its author and salvation for its end. I believe our world is a better place because of the influence of this Book. My life has been transformed because of the truth of this Book.

I sneaked and found my Christmas present when I was a teenager. It was a Bible. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I wanted a B B gun. However, looking back, that Christmas present was the best one I ever received.

My Bible professor in college would say about the Bible: ‘‘God said everything he meant to say and only what he meant to say.

‘‘And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shinning in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning stars arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophesy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophesy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.’’

This is the Book of the ages. Not this Book plus something else. ‘‘Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall never pass away.’’

For fifty years I have stood behind pulpits and preached the Word of God with authority. The authority is deritive. This Book will judge us at the last day. Therefore, we need to know the Word of God.

1. THE WORD OF GOD MAKES US WISE UNTO SALVATION.

2 Timothy 3:15 ‘‘And that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through which is in Christ Jesus. ...
