Good morning. Two more weeks till Easter - can you believe it? And I know for a lot of us, fasting from something during Lent is kind of a new idea. I met a mom with her little son in the lobby the other day, and he wanted to get in on this, so this was Max’s commitment: (show pic) - he’s giving up hitting for Lent. Good idea, right? Of course, he’s really looking forward to Easter, when he can resume the fun. So, in all seriousness: if you’ve been fasting from something these past few weeks, let me encourage you to finish strong. And even if you haven’t done that well - you know, maybe you haven’t followed through on your commitment - here’s another opportunity: two weeks till Easter; great opportunity to give something up so you can make more room for Christ.

So, in addition to fasting from something temporarily, there are things that God calls us to give up more permanently. We’ve been talking about giving up our control, and our pride, and our independence - things like that. And today we’re going to talk about another one of those things that God calls all of us to let go of.

So…the events in today’s passage took place somewhere in the middle of the night between Thursday and Good Friday. In your bulletin it has the reference from the Gospel of John; we’re actually going to look at the version in Matthew, because it’s more detailed. So - Matthew chapter 26; we’re going to read verses 31-35, and then skip down to verses 69-75. Okay? Matthew 26, beginning in verse 31 - here we go…

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
