Paul is responding to some charges that have been made against him.
He had announced some plans to come to Corinth. He was unable to come and did
not come. Because of that his enemies latched on to that and said that proves
Paul is an unstable man. He says one thing and he does another thing. You
can't depend on him. His yes doesn't mean yes and his no doesn't mean no. So,
as Paul is responding to that, right in the very middle of it, he give us
this beautiful passage of how wonderful it is to have Jesus in our lives.
11 Cor. 1:21, 22
Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ,
and hath anointed us, is God:
Who hath also sealed us, and given the
earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Paul responds to the criticisms made against him with one of the most
beautiful statements in the whole Bible of how wonderful it is to have Jesus
in your heart and in your life. Paul had a way of taking the most trivial
matters and using it to teach the most wonderful, glorious truths. They have
said, Paul, you are fickle, you can't be depended upon, your life is a very
unstable life. You say yes and yet you mean no. You say no and yet you mean
yes. You are not dependable, your life is not stable. In response to that
Paul says in verse 21 that God is making us strong in Christ. He is saying
that when you come to know the Lord as your Savior, God gives to you in your
heart the potential to be strong and stable in life. There are basically two
.inds of lives that are lived in the world. Some people's life is like the
chaff. Every wind that blows by just carries them away. They don't have any
strength, they don't have any stability, there are no roots in their lives.1
