The great theme of the book of Philippians is how to be a happy, productive, fulfilled person. All through the book of Philippians we have been learning some of the lessons about how we can have the joy of the Lord in our life and how we can be a happy person. I do not believe you can ever be a truly happy person unless you learn what it is to be a contented person. There are not a lot of people who are contented and yet contentment is a very great treasure. In I Timothy 6:6 the Bible says, "Godliness with contentment is great gain." If you know the Lord and have found the secret of contentment then the Bible says you are a very rich person.

Benjamin Franklin said one time: "Contentment makes a poor man rich and discontent makes a rich man poor." I think that is true. Someone else says that contentment softens our privations, sweetens our privileges and makes a cottage as fair as a castle. If you know what it is to be contented you know that is exactly true. There really aren't many contented people in the world. My experience has been that many of those who are Christians, those who know Jesus as their Savior and are born again children of God, really do not know what it is to be contented in their heart. We think we are contented sometimes, but we may not be as contented as we ought to be. Too many of us fill our lives with complaints. We complain because the children are loud instead of being grateful to God that they are healthy and happy. We complain that our houses are not as large as we would like them to be and yet there are people in the world who do not have a house where they can live. We complain that our car is not the kind of car we would like for it to be when there are thousands, yea, millions of people in the world who have never even seen a car. We complain about our circumstances when many people would gladly exchange their circumstances for ours. I'm talking about how to ...
