CONTEXT: Nehemiah - In opening to Nehemiah you will find that it falls just a couple of books before Psalms. But that is a bit misleading, because you see - Chronologically Nehemiah is the last historical book of the bible. That fact gives you some insight to it's interpretation. Because what comes next? After Nehemiah accomplishes the building of the wall, historically the next recorded even is what? MESSIAH.

The nation of Israel was visible evidence of the promise of God to Abraham.

- As we saw in our last series God had made a promise to Eve, to defeat Satan through her SEED, a male descendant.
- God made a similar promise to Abraham, to take this one old man and make him into a great nation, and through his SEED all of the nations of the world would be blessed.

As the nation multiplied God would visit them from time to time again making promises, ratifying and reminding them of the covenant.

- In Deuteronomy 4 God told Moses If your people worship idols they will perish from the land. I will scatter them among the nations. But if they return to the Lord and obey him, the Lord will mercifully restore them to the land of promise.

Israel had grown into a mighty nation by the time of King David and his son Solomon. But Solomon began to chase after foreign women and foreign gods. That became a sin habit in the Kings of Israel. Until as God has promised he Judged Israel.

- The first judgment came by the sword of the Assyrians in 722BC.
- The second came by the sword of the Babylonians in 587BC.

The Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar would lay siege to a nation, then in order to maintain their control they would take the ruling class into exile, which lessened the likelihood of a rebellion. Hence the stories of men like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

But there was a problem with that - without good leaders to rule, the land became unprofitable and the ruling nat ...
