"The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." If you were going to paint the picture of a pastor, how would you paint it?

If you were going to write a description of a pastor how would you write it? I carry in my bible a picture of a man unknown to most of you. His name is Ebb Kilpatrick and on the picture it says he is the twelfth pastor of my home church Tabernacle Baptist church in Carrollton, Georgia. I bring this picture along with me and I carry it in my bible because for the first ten years of my life this man was my pastor. He is the man who personally led me to the Lord Jesus Christ. When I was writing the history of my home church I had the opportunity to do an intense study of the ten years of his pastorate in my church. And in writing the portrait of this man in that particular section of the book I came to see what a pastor really ought to be. This man in many ways is exemplified what I believe the bible teaches a pastor is intended to be. Now in a real sense the verses which I have read to you to- day and which form the basis for our study this morning, give us the portrait of a pastor. Here is God's revealed truth concerning the role, the responsibility and the reward of a pastor. Now the being of a pastor is a very responsible position. It is a place that no man should take to himself carelessly. I remember reading the story of a great preacher in Scotland, named John Welch.
