Ready to Preach Sermon Outline

A pastor never knows what they are walking into each day when it comes to serving the needs of others. After all, emergencies never happen at a good time. And sometimes, a pastor’s routine simply gets interrupted by daily life. One way to prepare for this is to have ready-to-preach sermon outlines on hand.

When emergencies or tragic accidents happen, they can cause more work for the pastor. Then, there are times when the pastor falls sick and cannot preach that Sunday. When those moments come up, the pastor may find themselves not ready for the Sunday sermon.

Local and world events also happen that may require a Biblical response. Your community may be experiencing a natural disaster or perhaps a tragic event has occurred that needs to be acknowledged.

Why Do Pastors Need Ready-to-Preach Sermon Outlines?

When unforeseen circumstances such as a death, illness, or family emergency arise, they can easily derail sermon preparation. A tragedy may take up the pastor’s Friday and Saturday, leaving them tired and unprepared for that Sunday. However, sermon preparation can be thrown off by much more than just emergencies. Although each situation is different, we can take comfort in knowing that the message of Scripture stays the same.

Let’s look at some compelling reasons pastors and their leadership teams should keep ready-to-preach sermon outlines handy:

1. Prepare for Illness or Unexpected Events

Life happens. Whether the pastor or a family member falls ill, ready-to-preach outlines ensure the Sunday service is always able to continue.

2. Avoid the Default Trap

When a preacher is in a time crunch for sermon prep, they often default to familiar themes. A ready-to-preach outline prevents this repetition and keeps messages fresh.

3. Acknowledge World Events

There will be world events that must be addressed and these cannot be planned. However, a pastor can craft a generic sermon outline that can then be adjusted to respond to specific current events. A theme like the Sovereignty of God can easily be adapted to whatever is happening.

4. Respond to Local Tragedies

There will also be local tragedies and events that will need to be addressed from the pulpit. A previously prepared sermon can address these events, bringing comfort, and offer a biblical perspective to congregants during hard times.

5. Address Cultural Hot-Button Topics

There are hot-button topics in our culture that emerge and attempt to shake the faith foundation of the people of our congregations. Having an outline that addresses foundational truths like God’s sovereignty or justice ensures the church can respond promptly to cultural challenges.

5 Tips For Your Ready-to-Preach Sermon Outline

There are so many moving parts to oversee in a local church, and emergencies can interrupt that, often putting the sermon on the back burner. Ready-to-preach sermon outlines are vital when faced with the uncertainties of life. Keep your standalone sermon series fresh.

1. Remember the Media Team

The media team will still need time to prepare well-crafted sermon bumpers and outlines to help accentuate the sermon. Give them copies of your ready-to-preach sermons to keep on hand, too.

2. Prepare Your Creative Elements in Advance, Too

If your sermon illustrations need props or creative reminders to hand out, have them already stocked and prepared. Or write your sermon in such a way that you do not need additional creative elements.

3. Stay Prepared Throughout the Year

Your standalone sermons should be on a variety of topics and Biblical books. That way, when they are needed, you can look at the bigger picture of your church’s sermon “diet.” Look to see which topics, passages, or Bible characters have not been addressed in a while.

4. Empower Other Communicators to be Ready

Encourage your staff and other communicators–including laymen–to write out their own ready-to-use sermon outlines that they too can use on the fly in case of emergencies.

5. Choose “Easy” Topics to Focus On

Pastors, church staff, and lay leaders can easily write standalone and ready-to-use sermon outlines on softball topics like

  1. Forgiveness
  2. Prayer
  3. Hope
  4. Evangelism

The Wisdom of Planning Ahead

Preparing in advance is wise for life and ministry. Solomon writes in Proverbs 27: 12, “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”

A prudent pastor foresees “danger” and plans accordingly. It is in these times pastors need to have a ready-to-preach sermon on hand. They should also urge their other pastors and leaders on staff to have a ready-to-preach sermon as well, in case the pastor cannot be the one to respond.
