Some people don’t give because they don’t want to share what God has blessed them with. But honestly, some people don’t give because they’ve never been taught what Scripture says about giving. If they knew the principles of Scripture, they would give. It’s not an issue of rebellion; it’s an issue of not knowing God’s teaching. So, let’s look at twenty-one Scriptures that talk about giving and see what God has to say. These would be perfect Scriptures to share during your offering time.
- 2 Corinthians 8:3-4—”For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—”
- 2 Corinthians 8:5—”and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.”
- 2 Corinthians 8:13-15—”For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, ‘Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.’”
- 2 Corinthians 9:6—”The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
- 2 Corinthians 9:7—”Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
- Malachi 3:8—”Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.”
- Malachi 3:10—”Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
- Luke 6:38—”Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
- Proverbs 3:9-10—”Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will be bursting with wine.”
- Proverbs 11:24—”One gives freely yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.”
- Acts 20:35—”In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
- Matthew 6:1-4—“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
- Matthew 6:19-21—”Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
- Luke 21:1-4—”Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
- 1 Corinthians 16:2—”On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.”
- Philippians 4:16-19—”Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
- Matthew 23:23—” Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.”
- Leviticus 27:30, 32—”Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord. And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman’s staff, shall be holy to the Lord.”
- Psalm 4:5—”Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.”
- Genesis 28:20-22—”Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”
- Psalm 37:21—”The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives.”
I hope these Scriptures help you grow your people in the area of giving. You and I know that we can never outgive God, and that there is something special about being used by God to bless others.
